Could u explain to me how the texture painting works on the terrain?

Whenever i try to use it, it doesnt paint anything.

 

What i do is :

I press R

Rightclick, select Texture in the menu.

Then click a texture in the virtualtree.

Then click and draw on the terrain.

Nothing happens.

As I understand it simply erases the texture, hold down ctrl, it will cover in white.
