May I ask if you are running mysql server? There might be some error which has occured try manually start the mysql server, if that wont help could you provide us a bit more details, there might be a error occured with mysql.sock file which stops you from connecting to db if thats the case you have to delete the mysql.sock file.

Open terminal and write this if you cant start mysqld:
service mysqld stop mv /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock.bak service mysqld start
